Friday Pre-conference Topics
  Session One: Beginners Lab
with Miles |
| In this pre conference session we will be building a basic LOG-IN set up and page
security system, that will use sessions and session variables, and access a datasource
for validation. You will learn and explore how and why to use a commented variable
system, why a common naming structure is a good idea, and then to utilize included
logic files to achieve database independence! We will be covering variable creation,
basic array creation and usage, and session usage and deployment. There will be a Q & A
and a walk through of the application when completed. Our goal will be to create a better
understanding of why a login system works and how to utilize one in your applications going forward.
NOTE: Please bring your laptop with Lasso 8.5.1 fully installed and your database
of choice already set up. We will NOT be covering set up issues, installation issues
in any way, shape or form.

 |
Session Two: Inlines, SQL Statements, and Sessions, Oh My!
with Miles |
| In this pre conference session we will continue from session 1 on building out an application
that accesses a datasource to grab a series of records, then modify and delete them.
However its the WAY that we’ll do this! We will be presenting two different methods
to perform this task, as well as touch on how to use array’s and sessionable arrays to
display data to the end user. We will explore and touch on using inline methodologies
and SQL methods to achieve the same results, as well as touch on briefly using a straight
AJAX method as well as an LJAX method to achieve the same results. We will be using the
methodologies touched on in the beginners lab, but it is not a requirement that you
take that session. There will be time for a Q & A afterward.
NOTE: Please bring your laptop with Lasso 8.5.1 fully installed and your database
of choice already set up. We will NOT be covering set up issues, installation issues
in any way, shape or form.

Saturday Main Topics
  Managing Common Code
with Jonathan Guthrie |
| Once a developer expands beyond managing a single site, coping with common code becomes a
serious issue that has the potential to spiral out of control. In my talk I will be presenting some
approaches to this issue. I’ll be covering techniques using Lasso and Subversion,
discussing the advantages and disadvantages of the options available.

Cutting Through The Hype: Simple Web 2.0 with Lasso and jQuery
with Jason Huck |
| Discover just how easy it is to incorporate the latest "Web 2.0" techniques --
including web services, AJAX, and dynamic UI effects -- into your projects. This
presentation will demonstrate how to use available Lasso custom tags in combination
with the jQuery javascript library to create self-contained, self-updating widgets
that pack a high degree of functionality into a minimal amount of code. If you’ve
been avoiding the Web 2.0 phenomenon because of the learning curve, this talk is guaranteed
to be an eye-opener.

  Implementing a Changes Tracking System
with Eric Landmann |
| As websites are becoming more sophisticated and accessed by more people with different roles,
keeping a record of who made changes to which data can be important. From real estate,
to basic research, to medical applications, this information can be vital, and is a
required component of many sites. This presentation will address how to install a system
that tracks data changes for any type of data, how it is constructed, code examples, and
administrative area. Starting from scratch or retrofitting an existing site will be discussed.

Time to Stop Hating and Start Loving the Lasso PDF Tag Suite
with Carlestam |
The paperless office is NOT here yet. A lot of information produced and distributed on the web needs to be printed
at one point or another. Corporate graphical guidelines force developers to adapt certain look-and-feels.
To our rescue comes the Lassos pdf tags. Learn how to produce
- Nice looking multi-page invoices
- Multi-column info leaflets
- Advanced address labels or other label oriented output such as name tags
- Lists etc.
Master how to integrate dynamically uploaded graphics of differing size into the text flow and how to calculate
the exact space needed for chunks of text to allow precise positioning on the page.

Sunday Roundtable Topics
  Four Practical Examples for AJAX-Newbies
with Nikolaj de Fine Licht |
| Presented will be four practical examples for AJAX newbies combining AJAX, Lasso and a
database using the public libraries Prototype and Scriptaculous. They include a simple
autocompleter, updating display with value from autocompleter, drag-
and-drop sortable lists and populating a menu with options based on
selection in another menu. Afterwards you should be able to go home
and implement these examples into your own solutions.
This is not designed for those that are already Javascript and AJAX experts.
